Albert, 12th Grade
Mount Saint Michael Academy

As Albert Liriano, a 17-year-old senior at Mount Saint Michael Academy in the Bronx, sets his sights on college to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering, he knows he’s ready for the challenge.

Thanks to the solid foundation he’s building at Mount Saint Michael Academy – founded nearly a century ago by the Marist Brothers – and support from Inner-City Scholarship Fund, he’s equipped with the rigorous, technology-forward, values based education that is preparing him for college and beyond.

What’s helped him most? “I chose the Mount because of what they teach and how they teach it,” he says. “They bring real-life examples into the classroom.”

Albert appreciates how his teachers break down lessons that make learning relevant and relatable. While he naturally gravitates toward math and science, he also enjoys his AP government class and volunteering at the local food pantry. “It’s fulfilling knowing that I’m making an impact,” he explains.

Albert also competes annually with the school’s Science Olympiad team. He’s always excited to face what he calls “some pretty big hitters” and his confidence is grounded in his education and his classmates.

One of the key pillars at Mount Saint Michael Academy is the sense of brotherhood and mutual support, a bond that Albert believes is one of his team’s greatest strengths. It’s that foundation of trust, teamwork, and belief in each other that continues to propel him toward his future with confidence and purpose. So too is he grateful for Inner-City Scholarship Fund’s support. The scholarship helps him focus on his education while ensuring it won’t be out of reach because of cost. “I’m thankful,” he says of Inner-City and his sponsor. “It’s definitely made it more affordable. It’s letting me focus on the school experience and not worry about whether my parents can pay the tuition.”
